Abstract
The main claim of this paper is that, the processing strategy of maximization-minimization between the submaxims of Quantity-1 and Quantity-2 is not exhausted by the general expectations concerning the maxim-based default inference, but also has a general correlation with speakers' communicative intentions which consist of an important factor of the pragmatic inference. In order to defend this view, I proceed by taking the following issues: First of all, it is advocated that a few speaker-oriented pragmatic factors of communicative intentions, such as speaker interests or speaker-specific expectations, are a good part of speakers' conscious stretch of context and hence they must be incorporated within general patterns of context. Second, Quantity maxim correlates with Quality maxim: The production of quantity implicatures relates with the qualitative aspect of information, i.e., epistemic modification of 'known to the speaker' vs. 'unknown to the speaker.' Third, against the vagueness by Grice's claim that speakers are expected to give the REQUIRED information, the full import intended to be conveyed by an utterance is discerned by the contextual inference processes of quantity information.
