A Neo-Gricean Approach to English Conditionals

Abstract
This paper aims at neo-Gricean analysis of English counterfactual conditionals. In this paper, I will observe that there is a systematic functional division of pragmatic labor according to the types of conditionals in neo-Gricean framework. It will be also argued that the choice of different conditional markers is governed by such pragmatic factors: (1) the speaker's epistemic stance toward the propositional content in p and q, (2) neo-Gricean principles Q, I, and M which are used to represent clear distinctive, interpretive aspects of sub-categories of conditionals; pure hypothetical conditional interpretation, factual conditional interpretation, and counterfactual interpretation and (3) optional applications of pragmatic principles of which the speakers and hearers of conditionals make use crosslinguistically. Through comparison of conditionals between Korean and English, the application of pragmatic principles becomes clearer.
