Abstract
This study aims to provide answers to two essential questions concerning English middles: (1) How are they derived? (2) What kind of verbs can enter into middle formation? In the process of finding answers to these two questions, I assume that the lexical approach to English middles is more appropriate than the syntactic one in accounting for the process of middle formation. This paper shows that a necessary condition for the middle verb and a lexical rule for middle formation can best be described and formalized within the theoretical framework of Pustejovsky's (1991a, 1991b, 1995) Generative Lexical Theory. In addition, it is shown that the postulated lexical rule can predict whether a verb can be used in middles
