Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show that the absolute versus nonabsolute correlation between Tense and CP in certain languages not only crucially determines the structures of regular relatives but also limits possible forms of non-regular relatives. While a language such as Korean has regular relatives(i.e. relatives with an external head) with a structure of a complex NP consisting of an IP complement and head N, the regular relatives in a language such as English have a structure of a DP containing a CP complement (with C or/and a wh-phrase in Spec of CP) and head N. The structures of non-regular relatives, the internally-headed relatives (IHRs) and the light-headed relatives(LHRs) in Korean on the one hand, and the LHRs in Polish and standard free relatives(SFRs) in languages such as English and French on the other hand, reflect the different correlations between Tense and CP; in addition, the head N must be present for the preceding IP in the former, even if it is formal. However, the latter may be headless or null-headed, though CP elements such as C or/and a wh-word in [Spec, CP] must be present.
