이 논문은 음악으로 향유되었던 시조 작품들을 대상으로, 시조라는 갈래에서 음악이 어떻게 인식되고 있는가를 살펴보았다. 시조에는 음악 자체에 대한 관심을 표현한 것에서부터 구체적인 연주 형태가 제시되기도 한다. 또한 악기는 단지 소재로 역할하기도 하지만, 특정 악기의 연주 방법을 자세히 묘사하고 있기도 하다. 이 논문에서는 개별 작품들에 나타난 이러한 양상들을 살펴, 그 의미를 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 어떤 경우 음악이 작품 속에 단지 소재로 제시되기도 하지만, 다양한 양식의 음악에 대해 전면적으로 형상화하고 있는 작품들도 적지 않다. 개별 작품들에는 특정의 음악 양식의 연행 모습이 상세히 묘사되기도 하는데, 이를 통해 당시 그 음악이 어떻게 연주되었는가를 구체적으로 확인할 수도 있다. 음악을 다루고 있는 작품들은 시대적으로 고르게 나타나지만, 대체로 수적으로는 조선 후기의 작품들에 집중되어 있는 것도 엄연한 현실이다. 대상 작품들의 두드러진 특징은 시조에는 음악에 대한 다양한 관심이 펼쳐져 있다는 것이다. 또한 중세의 관념에서 음악이 지니는 의미가 그렇듯이, 시조 갈래에서 음악은 대체로 긍정적으로 인식되고 있다. 때문에 작품 속에 반영되어 있는 음악적 면모를 꼼꼼히 따져봄으로써, 그 시대의 예술적 면모를 적절히 해석해낼 수 있다고 여겨진다. 다시 말하자면 당시의 예술사를 재구성하는데 있어 문학 작품이 매우 중요한 ‘자료적 가치’를 지니고 있다는 것이다. 이 논문에서는 이를 위해 대상 작품들을 그 성격에 따라 분류하고, 각각의 내용들이 어떻게 파악될 수 있는지를 검토해 보았다. 이러한 작업을 통해서 드러난 특징적인 면모를 정리하고, 음악으로서의 시조의 성격을 밝혀보았다. 나아가 이러한 성격이 각 작가별 또는 시대별로 어떻게 나타나는가를 살펴, 그 의미를 따져보았다.
Abstract
This article was studied the literary works of Sijo which was enjoyed as a music, and was reviewed how the music was recognized in the genre of Sijo. Sijo spanned from the description of being interested on the music itself to the suggestion of the specific musical performance. Musical instrument was only playing as a role of subject matter, but it sometimes depicted the playing method for the specific musical instrument in detail. This article aimed the suggestion of the meaning by observing the aspects expressed on distinct literary works. In some case, music was suggested as only a matter of subject in a literary work, but not a few works totally configured the various types of music. In a certain work, the figure of performing the specific type of music was described in detail, and the method of playing the music could be confirmed definitely in those days through the work. The literary works dealing with music appeared in the same frequency whole through the distinguished period, but it was obvious that most of the works were found in the late of Chosun Dynasty. The conspicuous characteristics of the studied literary works were that there were various concerns about music in Sijo. And also, the music in the genre of Sijo was recognized positively in general like as the possessed meaning of music was to the concept at the time of Middle Age. So, the artistic features in the days of Sijo might be analyzed appropriately through the elaborate studies on the musical aspect reflected in the literary works. In other words, the literary work contained very important 'value as data' for reconstructing the history of art at those days. In this article, studied works were assorted by the characters and reviewed the contents for the analysis, respectively. The characteristic feature revealed through the studies were arranged, and clarified the character of Sijo as music. For the more, the meanings of Sijo were studied by considering how these characters were expressed by distinct artists or periods.
