Abstract
The aim of this paper is to grasp each stage's characteristic of a classical Chinese translation of Sijo in late Chosun(조선) and its meaning in Sijo-history by examining their aspects. The classical Chinese translation of Sijo is not made by a purpose disparaging classical Korean poetry, nor for temporary taste. The unfolding process itself is a continuant and important occurrence that shows aspects of literary-historical turn and response for that. The results of study are as follows. A classical Chinese translation from late 16th century to early 17th century is experimental and fragmentary. Sadaebu(사대부), belonged to Confucian cultural boundary, chose 5word-Gosi(5언고시) and are concerned about classical Korean poetry. But they are difficult to accept an emotion and an expression of Sijo. A classical Chinese translation from late 17th century to early 18th century is generalized by many authors. They try to represent Sijo and to converse its theme to their own interests. Also, they attempt to stylize various poetic forms. Translation authors in middle and late 18th century affirm a role of classical Korean poetry and utilize it positively. They utilize Jangdangu(장단구) which makes individual expression possible, and transfer realistically the feeling and the atmosphere of Sijo. A classical Chinese translation after 19th century expands quantitatively, but its trend is different with early stage's. It falls away from the Ihaenggi(이행기)-like liveliness and vitality, regards Hansi(한시) more important than Sijo with sticking to the form of 7word-Jeolgu(7언절구), and comes to indulge in a possession itself. By examining these unfolding process, we can find a meaningful clue to answer about the disputed point of Sijo-history; such as ascertaining authors of Sijo, origination and charging group of Saseol-Sijo, the figure of oral-tradition stage's Sijo, the role of Sadaebu as transmitter before editing Gajib(가집). In this point, a discussion of classical Chinese translation of Sijo is another code to read late Chosun.
