Abstract
With Seok-Kyun Ho's Sijo(時調) and Basho's Haiku in the center, I studied on the differences of the aesthetics of sijo and haiku. Sijo and Haiku have several things in common. Sijo and Haiku abbreviate and refine a poetical imagination and thought in short form. Sijo is “a temperate mode that controls one’s honest momentary feelings.” Haiku is “a verbal device that create impressive silent.” Both are succeed from traditional poetry. Sijo inherited 3․4 meter(3 and 4 syllable rhythms) from min-yo(民謠, a folk song), chasa(嗟辭, an exclamatory meter) and syllogistical structure from hyangga(鄕歌). Haiku did 5․7meter(5 and 7 syllable rhythms) from waga(和歌) and renga(連歌). Both are fixed form of verse that sung by racial language and expressed one's own lives and world independent from Chinese poetry. There are many differences between sijo and haiku. Each of the three lines of sijo is to be composed of 14-16 syllables with a total of no more than 45 syllables. Each line of the sijo has its own particular role. The first line presents an aesthetic meeting between human and world. The context for the poem is usually provided in the second line to further develop the image and meaning of the first line, or a second image that is related to the first is created. The first and second line is almost juxtaposition. The first meter of third line is the punch meter. It raise lyricism the maximum and convert poetically from conflict and opposition to harmony. So, the third line solves all the conflicts in the first and second line and fuses the image and the idea of the poem, human and world. Sijo expressed the aesthetics of heung(興, getting excited with joy) and mushim(無心, being unintentional). Haiku is a poem that captures a ‘moment in time’ in 5-7-5 pattern, usually involving nature, and as perceived or experienced by the poet. Kire leave a silent space and fill in many meaning in reader's heart. Kigo, reads firstly into metonymy, which indicate in which season the Haiku is set or image related into waga. It reads secondly into metaphor, which suggest metaphysical meaning. Because seasonal word imply the vanity of life and the beauty of the disappeared. By the form of images, replacement of metonymy and metaphor, and continuous mutual reading between present text and absent text, Haku fill a 5-7-5 short form with mutual sympathy between human and universe, the unlimited truth in it. Haiku expressed the aesthetics of awakening in stillness, sabi(さび).
