Multiple Subject Constructions in Korean and Vietnamese

There has been little, if any, attention to the existence of ‘multiple subject constructions(MSCs)’ in Vietnamese. By investigating Vietnamese sentences against the pre-established 5 types of MSCs in Korean, we find that Vietnamese has the same 5 types of MSCs as in Korean. Each of the 5 types of MSCs is not of multiple subjects in Korean as well as in Vietnamese, though the name may misguide. Type I MSC is a construction which has a subject NP and an argument NP of an intransitive verb. Type II MSC has an additional obligatory adposition phrase to Type I MSC. Type III MSC is characteristic of a quantifier NP. Type IV MSC is characteristic of the ‘inalienable possession relation’ between the subject and the subject-like NPs. Type V MSC is a construction with a topic/contrastive topic/focus position and a subject. ‘Thì’ marking contrastive topic figures in Vietnamese, and topic/contrastive topic marker ‘-nun’ figures in Korean. We suggest formal semantic characterizations for each type of the MSCs in Korean and Vietnamese.
