Abstract

One of the most efficient ways to conduct comparative studies on two poets who are not interrelated is to establish a third term that relates to both. This article intends to establish Tufu, who influenced both Yun Seon-do and Matsuo Basho, as the third term, thereby comparing the aspects of Tufu's influence on the two poets. It specifically focuses on how Tufu's poetic passages, as received by the other two, are differently embodied in their literary texts. After close reading and comparison, this article concludes as follows. First, while Yun modifies the meaning of Tufu's poetic passages in various ways, Basho receives and embodies them without changing their original meaning. Second, Yun, viewed from the perspective of poetic mood, converts the dark atmosphere--the character of Yin--of Tufu's poems to a bright one--the character of Yang. Basho, on the contrary, receives Tufu's dark mood as it is. Third, in the light of text reality, Yun's poems, because of the absence of experience in poverty and his frequent composition of rhyme-borrowing verses, result in a decrease in text reality. Basho, in contrast, composes from his own experiences during his travels, to the extent that his poems come to acquire strong reality compared to Yun's works
