Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the curriculum of Singapore’s Design and Technology (D&T) subject in preparation for the intelligent information society. The research methodology involved content analysis of curriculum documents from Singapore’s Ministry of Education and relevant literature on Singapore’s education system. The analysis was conducted by the research team and validated through expert review. The key findings are as follows: First, the D&T curriculum is structured around three core competencies: ‘design thinking competency’, ‘design manipulation competency’, and 'designer-like disposition (attitude)', while organically incorporating 21st-century skills. This reflects the global emphasis on design thinking and processes in education. Second, regarding digital and AI education, the curriculum promotes meaningful use of ICT tools while discouraging excessive time investment, demonstrating a balanced approach that emphasizes digital literacy without compromising the subject’s essence. Third, in terms of learner education, the curriculum systematically deepens content and scope across school levels, aiming for differentiated education. Notably, it provides strict assessment guidelines for courses linked to higher education admission. Based on this analysis, implications for developing Korea’s technology education curriculum are presented. These include establishing subject-specific hierarchies, constructing spiral curricula, developing curricula focused on the essence of technology education, implementing rigorous assessment linked to academic advancement, appropriately integrating digital and AI elements, and balancing process-oriented and content-oriented curricula. These approaches are expected to contribute to qualitative improvement and enhanced international competitiveness of Korean technology education.
