Abstract

This study aims to examine the performance tradition of “Eobuga” and check the nature and status of “Changbusa” in its context. During the late Goreyo and early Joseon periods, “Eobuga” was a song sung to conclude the royal court banquet called Sanghwajoeoyeon. Consisting of 12 chapters, this “Akjang Eobuga” existed in the form of repeating four chapters three times. The singing tradition of “Akjang Eobuga” was discontinued in the mid-16th century. Lee Hyeon-bo thus had no other choice but to make the new “Nongam Eobuga” by reducing the 12 chapters of “Akjang Eobuga” into nine and reciting the songs. Wanting to make up for the absence of singing, he made an additional five chapters in the short form and gave birth to a new way of performance that recited songs in the long form and sang songs in the short form. In the 17th century, Yun Seon-do also created the new “Eobusasisa” by incorporating the long and short forms. He made sure that the tradition of “songs in the long form(recite) + songs in the short form(sing)” established by Lee Hyeon-bo would continue by making performers recite his works and then sing their reverberations. In the early 18th century, Lee Hyeong-sang created “Changbusa”, which was clearly distinguished from the old "Eobuga" and followed the new "Eobuga" line. He named this work “Changbusa” instead of "Eobuga", even though he said that he inherited “Nongam Eobuga.” It is because he wanted to expand his work to sing many aspects of the life of a man living in seclusion without holding public office, instead of limiting the scope to the life of a fisherman. He also wanted to establish a new tradition for “Eobuga” in the performance aspect as well as the content aspect. He thus adopted the Ganga and Habak styles, which were used to perform 12 works from The Book of Odes at the Hyangeumju ritual in ancient China, in addition to the old style combining reciting and singing, directing each chapter in various ways for his merriment. The tradition of reinterpreting the old “Eobuga” in one’s own viewpoint and creating a new “Eobuga” continued in “Sogeobusa” by Lee Han-jin in the early 19th century. Consisting of eight chapters, “Sogeobusa” selected the style of singing four chapters repeatedly twice and accordingly inherited the early work “Akjang Eobuga” in an abbreviated form.
