Abstract

This paper is to focus on the 'Inner Side' of Okinawan women that was never described properly. To be specific, separating into three groups, the female authors of Okinawa and mainland, and by further, female authors, and male authors, it is to study the difference in the method of description depending on their stance. As the result, some of the interesting features are; (1) the ones exposed directly to malady of the modern Okinawan society are the women. The common thing is that Okinawan men's presence is insignificant at this point, and all the men from mainland, who newly appeared after the return, are displayed with negative images. Above all, (2) as the 'inner side' of female characters are described delicately, it is interesting that they inevitably encounter the ordeals of Okinawa. It points out the largely discriminated points with male authors' way of description, who placed the women, and their bodies without the description of women characters' 'inner side'. Lastly, (3) when mainland females authors use 'Okinawan woman' as the theme, it makes the issue out of the limitations that shows,The problem here is that 'Inner Side' of Okinawan women was ignored, and illustrated in the superficial image that was captured in the discriminated gaze(orientalism) of mainland women. Thus, this limitation was not only of the author, Shiraishi Yaoi, if looked back a little, indication was made that the limitation could be found many times among the feminists of mainland such as Ichikawa Husae.
