Abstract
This article introduced the Geumsansa-daemongrok(金山寺大夢錄) as a new material, which is an adaptation of Geumhwasa-mongyurok(金華寺夢遊錄) of the late Joseon Period. Geumhwasa-mongyurok had been authored in the middle of 17th century while the author of it is unknown. Geumsansa-daemongrok, which is in the collection of Park Cheol-sang, has the size of 20cm x 32.5cm and has 99 pages. Each page has 11 lines and each line has average 28 neat ‘haeseo-che’(square style) Chinese characters. The Geumsansa-daemongrok has the transcription of the first part and the second part bound in one book. It has 17 chapters as a ‘janghoe-che'(chapter-titled style, 章回體) novel. It has been verified by this study that the Geumsansa-daemongrok had been adapted by Seokgye(石溪) Mr. Choi(崔先 生) of Gyeongju Choi family(慶州崔氏) and his second son Seokryeon(錫璉) took the posthumous work of his father for editing in sequence, proofreading and annotation. Then giwa-sanin(畸窩散人) Choi In-sik(崔仁植) from Tamjin Choi family(耽津崔氏), who was a student of Seokgye Mr. Choi, added multiple reviews in the narration to complete the work. According to the introduction and the postscript, Seokgye Mr. Choi is Choi Deok-li(崔德履), who lived from 1760 till 1825 and he authored the introduction in the late March of 1820. It has been learned by this study that his second son completed the bookbinding in 1852 or after by taking back the work which had been lent to an other person, adding supplementation, annotation and including the reviews by a student of the original adapter Mr. Choi. The Geumsansa-daemongrok is based on the Geumhwasa-mongyurok; however, it is not a different version but it is an adaptation; because it is added of newly created chapters such as the Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, in which an evil spirit, who had been causing disasters to the Geumsan-sa Temple(金山寺), was born in the family of Oh Saeng(吳生) by the magic of an outlander monk and propagated the whole stories of the dynasty-founding by attending the banquet of the past dynasty-founding kings of China, and from Chapter 11 to Chapter 17, in which the war scenes against the military power of Yuan(元) are described. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the adaptation direction agreed with the logic of ‘revering Ming (明) while ostracizing outlanders’(崇明排胡) and supported the popularization trend during late Joseon period by expanding the character of military story in the form of ‘janghoe-che'(chapter-titled style, 章回體) for the narration composition of the work. In addition, it is necessary to note that the Geumsansa-daemongrok is one of the adaptations of Geumhwasa-mongyurok together with the Geumsansa-gi(金山寺記) by Mun Han-myeong(文漢命) and the Wanghoe-jeon(the story of the kings’ banquet, 王會傳) by Kim Je-seong(金濟性). Like the many different versions of Geu mhwasa-mongyurok, the Geumsansa-daemongrok also has the multiple significant scenes in the history of late Joseon period novels in the 19th century, at which time the novels agreed to the Minor Sinocentrism of the readers, added the character of military story and reinforced the thought of revering Ming(明).
