Abstract

This study tries to provide a possible answer to “What is Cinema?” by way of answering to the practical question of “What can Cinema do?”. The object of this essay is Ten Thousand Spirits, which proposes a new function of cinema as a work of mourning, by a Korean filmmaker and artist Chankyong Park. Firstly, I analyse how the film performs a cinematic mourning on the basis of the temporal dimension of cinematic ontology. Starting from the analysis of the temporal affinity between film and the shamanic ritual, gut, secondly, I look at the image strategies that this documentary adopts, such as, reenactment, footage, attraction images, and diverse images, in order to examine how the strategies function as forms of cinematic mourning. Thirdly, this study reveals that these strategies make the spectator follow three stages of “acknowledgement”, “acceptance” of the different reality of the shaman, Kim Keumhwa, and “participation” into the film-gut. This staged process of cinematic mourning is synthesised as “Sympathisation” which necessarily involves the viewer in the film. This process of sympathisation requires the viewer to do a praxis further beyond their participation. Thus, this essay examines an example of one practical role of cinema which provides a chance of reinterpretation of the past in order to change the future by recalling historical memory into present screen.
