Abstract
It was in the 1980s that the director Peter Pewas(1904-1984) and his works were rediscovered in relation to German postwar cinema. Pewas’ Oeuvre resembles a torso. Besides a variety of short films and commercials Pewas could realize only three long feature films: The Enchanted day(1944), Street Acquaintance(1948), and And many came over(1955). The focus of this essay lies in Pewas’ second film Street Acquaintance which deals with the dangers of venereal diseases in the postwar years. In this regard, it is not merely a ‘rubble film’ about the immediate postwar reality of Germany, it is also a Sex education film commissioned by the Soviet health authority and produced by the East German DEFA. Although Pewas follows in Street Acquaintance the narrative prescriptions of educational films, he manages successfully to overcome the restrictions given by this genre. Importantly, in contrast to conventional Sex education films Pewas does not morally judge women close to prostitution or having extramarital sex in the postwar years, but rather pleads for a more open minded approach to female liberties. On the basis of two female characters whose individual stories are linked together about ‘venereal disease’, this essay focuses on the staging of gender relations in the postwar era of Germany. For example, Street Acquaintance ‘cites’ the 1920s street movie genre in which ‘street’ was staged - in context of a ‘masculinity in crisis’ - as a metaphor for a place of seduction by female prostitutes. However, this ‘street’ is undergoing a semantic reinterpretation in Pewas’ film. Here it becomes the everyday working world of women, a public space where women are the key actors.
