Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of learner grouping types on the communicative interactions in the primary English class employing the reciprocal questioning techniques. Specifically, it investigates how to construct groups to maximally elicit learner interactions, in terms of proficiency level (heterogeneous grouping vs. homogeneous grouping) and group size (group of two vs. group of four). The classroom learners in grade 5 (N = 54) were observed over a 8-week period, and they participated in individual interviews, followed by a written survey which was designed to assess their perceptions of each grouping type. The analyses showed that homogeneous grouping elicited more interactions than heterogeneous grouping, and the learners preferred the former to the latter. On the other hand, they showed different behaviors on group size: the upper-level learners were more interactive in group of 2 whereas the lower-level learners did so in group of 4. It is suggested that teachers need to carefully construct groups when employing reciprocal questioning in the class, considering the present results.
