성인영어학습자의 발화오류분석을 통한 전치사 사용 연구

영어전치사의 수는 제한되어 있지만 문장의 구조에 중요한 표식으로 작용하며 전치사의 사용이 상대방과의 의사소통에 있어서 명확한 내용을 전달하는 동시에 문장이 가진 섬세한 의미 차를 나타낼 수 있어 영어 학습과 교육에 있어 중요한 교수 항목이 되고 있다. 그러나 영어전치사는 영어를 외국어(EFL)로 배우는 학습자가 완벽히 습득하기에 가장 어려운 문법요소로서, 전치사의 다양한 종류와 의미, 복잡한 사용규칙으로 영어 학습에 혼란과 어려움을 발생시켜 가장 많은 학습자 사용 오류가 발생하는 품사이다. 이에 사이버대학의 영어학과에서 운영 중인 원어민 교수자와 학습자의 화상 수업을 통해 녹음된 학습자 발화 자료를 이용하여 학습자구어코퍼스(Korean learner corpus of English)를 구축한 뒤, 이를 기반으로 전치사 사용에 대한 학습자 발화 오류를 조사하고 분석하여 이론적 고찰과 더불어 전치사 사용 오류의 종류, 내용 및 원인을 파악하여 학습자들이 겪는 전치사의 학습상의 어려움을 이해하고 한국의 영어 교육 상황에 실질적으로 적용할 수 있는 효율적인 영어전치사 교육을 위한 방향을 논의하고자 하였다. 연구참여자들의 전치사 발화오류의 형태별 비율은 대치˃첨가˃생략˃재배열의 순서로 나타났으며 전치사의 의미가 기본적인 의미에서 추상적인 의미로 확대되어 가는 과정에 대한 설명을 수반한 핵심 의미를 통한 학습 지도 방법이 필요하겠다.
Abstract
English prepositions are one of the most difficult grammar element for learners of English as a Foreign Language(EFL), often causing confusion and difficulty related to the various kinds of prepositions, meanings, and complex rules. Complete matching between a learner’s mother tongue and English is not possible because of the versatility of prepositions. This situation frustrates the learner’s tendency to find similarities between his or her mother tongue and English as a foreign language. The purpose of this study is investigate a range of prepositional errors made by Korean learners of English in spoken contexts as well as explore effective instructional methods. In addition to addressing theoretical considerations, this study examines the types, contents, and causes of prepositional errors to understand the learning difficulties experienced by learners through analyzing a Korean learner corpus of English. The learner corpus constructed by using learners’ utterance data recorded through video lessons between a native English teacher and learners in the English department of an online university. As a pedagogical solution for dealing with English prepositions, this study suggests an explanatory, semantically-based instruction which allows for deeper learning and increased longer rates of retention.
