Investigating the Learning Needs of Second Language Learners in the Context of Korean for Academic Purposes

This paper investigated the learning needs of college students learning Korean as a second language (L2) in the context of Korean for Academic Purposes (KAP). This questionnaire-based survey study included 97 intermediate and 84 advanced L2 learners and involved 34 questionnaire items developed concerning eight study situations and four language skills. The participants were asked to indicate the importance of each item on a 6-point Likert scale. When their responses were analyzed by study situation, it was found that advanced learners’ learning needs for seminars/discussions, private study/reading, reference/library use, essays/reports, and examinations were significantly higher than those of intermediate learners. When their responses were analyzed across language skills, advanced learners’ learning needs for writing and speaking (production skill) were significantly higher than those of the intermediates. The differential learning needs of learners at different proficiency levels are discussed in terms of their prior learning experience and developmental readiness in the Korean language.
