Abstract

This is a review of Korean-American literature based on the literaturearena in eastern Washington, U. S. A. Because of the localityand that heirwork belongs to neither American literature nor Korean literature andbecause of the strangement hat hey experience as outsiders and asmembers of a minority race in America nd the identical ambiguity that heyare neither Korean or American, the literature writen byKorean-Americans for multiple reason wil be the object of discusion, andthe characteristics mentioned above wil be studied as it isreflected in theirliterature as kernel themes.Acording to Edward W. Said, <filiation> means the naturaltransference or continuity betwen generations, or the relation betwen one'sinborn culture and the individual. <Afiliation> means various relations andsolidarity which one has experienced since birth. For ‘Korean-Americans,’filiation means continuity as a Korean and afiliation gives one a newidentity as an American. These people have cut away from their inbornidentity and culture as Koreans and have formed a new identity and cultureas Americans.They should escape from filiation to find a new afiliation,but it isthought not o be an artificial cutof but o be a harmonization and
