Abstract
Jin-Hee YimKorean American literature is a literature of in-betweenness at the crossroads of Korea and America, and this transnational context opens new venues of aesthetic concerns for depicting nations and their people. Korean American literature has long been a part of Korean Studies, which is geared to give deeper understanding of Korea to the general public of the West. It is noticeable that the necessity of portraying Korea, which is also known as "the hermit kingdom," or "the land of the morning calm," from the inside, has accelerated these ethnographic trends. This paper deals with the issue of how the Koreanness of Korean American literature functions as a matrix of transnational cultural translation. The question of how Korea is portrayed and what role Koreanness plays in it, is the main focus of the paper. Ilhan New's When I was a Boy in Korea, Younghill Kang's The Grass Roof, and Linda Sue Park's A Single Shard share a similar trend of ethnographical novels in writing Korean culture. This paper focuses on the mechanism of "othering" based on binary oppositions, as a way of describing the "alien and primitive" culture, through the eyes of the first world. This ethnographic methodology of othering, involves the artistic tapestry of "auto-orientalism" in Korean American literature. This paper is concerned with repositioning and re-conceptualizing the meaning of the nation and the formation of the identity of the racial, gender, and ethnic self in a transnational matrix and cultural translation. It is concluded that the transnationality involves translocation of cultures, that this transcultural literature is and will be a reservoir of meaningful literary resources to challenge a closed structure of identity formation of nations and to explore the issues of the hyphenated and diasporic self.
