초록
This article tries to analyze the characteristics of Goryeo in Lee Tae-juns novel, Hwang Jin-i. In the work, Goryeo is embodied in two forms, one for the criticism of the previous dynastys feudalism, and the other for prominence of historic sites in Songdo (Gaegyeong). Lee takes discrimination between legitimates and illegitimates and Yangbans (the Joseon nobilitys) vain recognition. Historic sites in Goryeos Capital, Songdo, including Gwibeopsa(귀법사), Cheonsuwon(천수원), and Manwoldae(만월대), appear as spaces for Hwang Jin-is love affairs with her lovers. At a series of spaces, in addition to her original poems, Hwang sings songs in Goryeo poetry in order to reveal her inside or seduce her lovers. Through these courses, the historic sites full of the old dynastys repentance are transformed to spaces where romantic love appears. While Hwang makes temporary love with Kim Ji-hak and with Jijok-Seonsa at Gwibeopsa(귀법사), Chwonsuwon(천수원) is the place where she first meets and falls in love with So Jae-hak and Lee Sa-jong, who she loves heart and soul. In contrast, Manwoldae(만월대) appears as a secrete space where Hwang seduces Byeok Gye-su. Lee Tae-jun embodies and shows romantic love with Goryeos songs at its historic sites. At the bottom of this spatial recognition lies Lees independent sight toward Goryeo. He uses the code of Hwang Jin-I to criticize Joseons feudalism that caused its break-down, and at the same time to calls on free human temper of the Goryeo Age. By combining the code of ‘Goryeo’ and the free code of ‘Hwang Jin-I,’ Lee Tae-jun negates all the norms and hypocrisies that oppress humans, and maximizes the human freedom. With the free soul, ‘Hwang Jin-I’ in Hwang Jini, Lee realizes his romantic view of literature that he intends toward.
