한문에서의 문장의 경계

문법 단위(grammatical unit)인 문장(sentence)의 경계는 마침표를 통해서 표현되는데 『맹자』에 대한 표점본 5종을 검토해 본 결과 「양혜왕 상」제 7장에서만 21개의 마침표 불일치 현상이 있었다. 이러한 현상이 발생하게 된 근원적인 이유는 한문의 언어체계에 맞는 문장의 정의 및 그 경계에 대한 연구가 본격적으로 진행되지 않아 학자들이 주관적 판단에 의해 표점을 찍었기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 통사론적 측면, 의미론적 측면, 그리고 한문이란 언어적 특성을 아울러 고려하여 ‘문장은 완정한 의미를 표현하는 독립할 수 있는 언어 단위로 주어[문두의 Noun phrase]가 관할하는 구절까지를 경계로 한다’는 서술을 시론적으로 제시함으로써 해결책을 모색하려고 하였다.
Abstract
The spot where we put a period on indicates the boundary of grammatical unit—the sentence. However, when we compare five different contemporary commentaries on Mencius, 21 discordances of periods' locations are found in the first chapter of Mencius, Liang Hui WangⅠ alone. We assume that these discordances are caused by the absence of in-depth study about the definition of the sentence suitable for Classical Chinese language so that the commentators cannot help but to put a period according to their subjective judgement. Considering the syntactic and semantic aspects of Classical Chinese sentence, this paper presents preliminary depiction of the sentence: the sentence is an independent language unit that expresses a complete meaning, and it takes what its subject—the first noun phrase of the sentence—have an effect as its boundary.
