수신(修身)과 애국(愛國): 『조양보』와 『서우』의 「애국정신담」 번역

Abstract

This study aims at analysis on two versions introduced by magazines 『Joyangbo』 and 『Seou』 among the four translated writings of the same 「A Tale of the Patriotic Spirit」 in the late 1900s. 「A Tale of the Patriotic Spirit」 is a historical story describing patriotic sacrifice and devotion of many honorable Frenches and through which their country stands up after the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and again becomes a great nation. However, this is also an apologue with several decades of separatedly independent episode. Individual characters show their own unique virtues or good deeds and indicate sort of cultivation of mind in text. In those days when 「A Tale of the Patriotic Spirit」 was intensively translated into Korean, academic circles under the control of Japanese Residency-General were publishing the self-cultivation textbooks excluding such good deeds as ‘royalty’ and ‘patriotism.’ On the other hand, many civil enlightenment groups established in the face of Japanese exploitation tried to find possible alternatives to this contemporary educational reality. Through publication of academic journals periodically, they would often provide necessary knowledge of departmental learning instead, which was supposed to be a responsibility of public education sector. The case of 「A Tale of the Patriotic Spirit」 in the common series of 『Joyangbo』 and 『Seou』 features disciplinary ethics or self-cultivation strongly with focus on virtues through translated historical stories. Incidentally, a matter of individual self- cultivation will lead to ‘a matter of personal finding’ however noticeable it maybe with regard to virtue. When it comes to historical and biological writings translated in the late 1900s, it is necessary to take them into consideration in the same context. These are not simply productions of patriotism or heroism. These are also self-cultivation in the course of finding a brand-new individual value.
