초록

본 연구는 특별한 동시대인이었던 발터 벤야민과 세르게이 에이젠슈테인 사유의 흥미로운 교차점 하나에 집중함으로써 그들에 대한 비교학적 읽기를 시도한다. 그 교차점은 서로 다른 이유로 서로 다른 측면에서 둘 모두의 관심을 끌었던 찰리 채플린이다. 우리는 채플린에 관한 기존연구의 지배적인 두 경향 모두를 염두에 두는 바, 첫 번째가 채플린 캐릭터의 특이한 제스처를 산업화 및 기계주의에 연결시켜 바라보는 접근법이라면, 두 번째는 채플린의 영화가 제공하는 웃음의 해방적 잠재력을 둘러싼 논쟁이다. 우리는 전자의 논의에는 소비에트 아방가르드의 ‘채플린 컬트’ 현상이라는 구체적인 역사적 맥락을 보태고, 후자의 이슈에는 아도르노에서 에이젠슈테인으로 이어지는 ‘유아적 잔인성’이라는 특별한 토픽을 연결시켜 볼 것이다. 이를 통해 벤야민과 에이젠슈테인의 ‘신경생리학적’ 공통 분모를 부각시키는 가운데 각자의 사유에서 ‘어린아이’ 혹은 ‘유년기’가 지니는 중대한 위상을 재검토함으로써, 그 공통분모가 갖는 중대한 함의를 드러내고자 한다.

Abstract

This article attempts the comparative reading of W. Benjamin’s and S. Eisenstein’s ideas by focusing on an intriguing intersection, the trajectories of which deserve special reconstruction. It is Charlie Chaplin who appealed to both in different respects and for different reasons. Drawing on both of the dominant tendencies in existing research on Chaplin: first, the approach that links the eccentric gesture of Chaplin’s characters to industrialization and machinism, and second, the debate over the emancipatory potential of laughter offered by Chaplin’s films, we will add to the former argument the specific historical context of the “Chaplin cult” phenomenon in the Soviet avant-garde, and explore the latter issue, relating it to the special theme of “infantile brutality” that runs from Adorno to Eisenstein. In doing so, we highlight the neurophysiological commonalities between Benjamin and Eisenstein and reveal their profound implications by investigating the crucial status of the topic of children or childhood in their thoughts.
