Abstract

This study regards Charlie Chaplin who acted as a post-human whose concept emerged in the 20th century. This hypothesis is supported through an analysis of a few of Chaplin’s films, including Modern Times and Circus and Fernand Léger’s Ballet Mécanique as interpreted by Chaplin. First, this study divides Charlie Chaplin’s motions into regular motion patterns and irregular ones to examine them further. Regular motions refer to the parts of his mechanical rhythms that were evident and typical in the modern society. These include both segmented and recombined motions, such as waddling or raising his hat. They may be understood as part of his modernity where the human body is used to embody the machines used in mass production. On the other hand, irregular motions refer to accidental movements that seem abrupt and irregular. These motions disrupt regular patterns. His body encounters objects and responds with unpredictable irregularity that seems almost against his own will, making the given situation a comical, uncontrollable mess. This irregularity in his movements prevents Chaplin from becoming fully incorporated into society; his every attempt being a part of society fails. Irregularity, such as Chaplin’s, not only represents an individual’s frustration but also reflects his or her inevitable inadequacies when compared to machines. This feeling of inadequacy calls attention to the social system of this era in which humans no longer felt in total control; it might also lead to further self-reflection on the position of humans in the future. Based on these perspectives, Charlie Chaplin is the 20th century’s modern human character that reflects contemporary posthuman discourse because his character aims to understand humanism as a social operating system and power dynamic that breaks from anthropocentrism.
