Abstract
Milan Kundera is often cited as a writer in the existentialist tradition. However, he himself rarely mentions existentialists in his essays or interviews; his few references to existentialist literature are also negative. Starting from the intuition that his novels and novel theory actually owe more to existentialism than he admits, this thesis compare sartrean existentialism and Kunderas novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I will focuse in particular on the themes such as contingency, freedom, situation, choice, authenticity and death. The common theme of Sartre’s Nausea and Kundera’s Unbearable Lightness of Being is the contingency of being. Sartre and Kundera understand contingency and freedom as the Janusian duality of modern existence. In Nausea and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, contingency is recognized not only as an ontological truth but also as an existential problem. Here, the two novelists find a possible solution to this problem in art and aesthetic existence in Nietzsche’s tradition. Sartre and Kundera identify the modern situation with the life in a trap. While Sartre emphasizes the possibility of active overcoming no matter how hopeless the historical situation is, Kundera’s diagnosis is more pessimistic. While the late Sartre’s analysis of the situation depends on Marx’s theoretical insight, Kundera’s understanding of history relies on the later Heidegger’s ontological thinking and critic of modernity. In Kunderas novel, history is regarded as uncontrollable, and situations are depicted as having no way out. The concept of situation plays also a key role in their novel theories. Sartre developed a theory of ‘situational novel’ in the late 1940s against Nouveau-Roman writers like Nathalie Sarraut. Although Kundera claims to be the successor of Central European modernists such as Kafka, Musil and Broch, in his novel theory, the influence of Sartre cannot be also ignored.
