Abstract
This study examines the political spatiality inherent in the thought of Fredric Jameson, focusing on two of his works: Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism and the essay “Future City.” Among the various features of postmodernism, Jameson links surface and fragmentation to the “spatialization of time,” emphasizing the transformation of time into an eternal present, and thus into something spatial. This shift from temporality to spatiality, he argues, leads to new modes of experiencing architecture and space. As part of an attempt to clarify the role of space within Jameson’s theoretical framework, this study investigates the following questions: First, how is Jameson’s spatial thinking developed, and in what ways does politicality operate within it? Second, how has the nature of everyday spatial experience in the age of late capitalism been structured and transformed? Third, what kinds of epistemological and political issues are raised by these transformations? In addition, the study will shed light on the implications of Jameson’s core concepts—cognitive mapping and totality.
