Abstract
In 2024, Fredric Jameson—the prominent Hegelian-Marxist thinker following in the footsteps of Lukács and Adorno—passed away. In the United States, a bastion of liberal capitalism and a world dominated by anti-socialist and anti-Marxist ideologies, Jameson survived as a committed Marxist. In this essay, we seek to detect the Marxism inherent in Jameson’s theoretical practice as a literary theorist and to rediscover it within his program of dialectical criticism. To this end, we read two of Jameson’s texts, shedding light on two models of dialectical thinking: (1) the dialectic of subject and object, and (2) the dialectic of determination and mediation. These models traverse the gap between individdual’s phenomenological lived experience and non-representable structures, paying attention to the determining effects exercised by history and society
