초록
Pride and Prejudice illustrates the ways in which Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine, who is discontented with the lack of propriety and education in Bennet home, chooses to be a mistress of an ideal society of Pemberley. Paying attention to the opposed values of the two places, this essay examines 4 film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and discusses the ways in which each film represents Bennet home and Pemberley as a society. The two Hollywood films create a Bennet Utopia with a benevolent father on the center and loving family members. By promoting middle class family values, the two films do not necessarily idealize Pemberley as a society of moral superiority; the 2005 film focuses on visual splendor of the landscape and the prestigious Pemberley estate yet overlooking elements of morality, while the 1940 film deletes Pemberley scenes. On the other hand, the two BBC telefilms give a harsh description of marital problems in Bennet home, yet desirability of Pemberley is represented in a different way depending on the characterization of two patriarchal figures such as Bennet and Darcy, as well as the heroine herself.
