The purpose of this paper is to investigate the authenticity of EFL textsfor fluent reading and communicative competence. There are two sidesthat have been promoted in English reading instruction nowadays. One isthat the language to be presented in the classroom should be as authenticas possible to represent the reality of native‐speaker use. The other is thatlearners should be as autonomous as possible, and be allowed to makethe language their own. The question I should like to raise in this studyis whether the authentic texts are really significant for EFL learners. Andthe authentic language which is real for native speakers is not likely tobe real for EFL learners. Authentic texts are used in language teachingbecause they are culturally enlightening, relevant, and the best preparationfor reading texts. At the same time, authentic texts, for all their virtues, can actually some drawbacks. In this sense, it is very controversial todevelop the appropriate and useful texts for foreign language students. For a long time it is argued that for language teaching, authenticmaterials were superior to materials especially written or simplified forlanguage learners. In spite of the widespread acceptance of the use ofauthentic materials, there is actually no consensus as to the meaning of‘authentic’. In this study, the elaborated materials for the EFL learnersare discussed regarding the meaning of ‘Authenticity’ for the sake offoreign language reading education.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the authenticity of EFL textsfor fluent reading and communicative competence.
