Abstract

This study aims to suggest the model of English reading classes by utilizing authentic printed materials for Korean EFL university students. First, this study examines theoretical background and some benefits of using authentic materials for English learning through some literature review. Next, a model of teaching English reading through authentic printed materials to university students is suggested by demonstrating the way of selecting and organizing materials, developing reading activities, teaching reading methods, and training some reading strategies. For material selection, need analysis was conducted to 54 students who were enrolled for the English reading course before the classes. Reading activities were developed to involve the students in the processes of pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. An Interactive reading method was adopted and practiced as opposed to a top-down processing or a bottom-up processing. A check list of reading strategies including items not only for cognitive strategies but also meta cognitive strategies was developed and used to self-evaluate and monitor the students' own reading strategies.
