Abstract
Ailee ChoThis article examines how Willkie Collins uses the legal doctrine of coverture as a metonymic pattern with which to explore the issue of masculine identity. According to English common law, once a woman married her legal existence was covered by her husband. The Woman in White which begins as a radical critique of legal coverture finally falls back into complacency, reinforcing the contemporary assumption on gender. The moral seems to be that coverture is bad with a bad husband, but right and proper with a good husband. This process of reaffirming legal coverture is an ideological fantasy which fills the gap of impossibility and conceals the lack in the symbolic, that is, the Other. The protagonist who was nervously susceptible to the spectre of woman in white attempts to establish his masculinity as resolute and self-reliant. But the final paradox of this novel is the lingering instability of masculine identity. The protagonist's transfer of his anxiety onto the landscape shows that the constitution of masculine identity as the Other interpellates only brings a new form of anxiety. It means that the spectre of woman in white, the Real is hovering at the edges of the restored symbolic order, continually seeping into it.
