Abstract
This study aims to examine and compare the Chinese character vocabulary included in the 2015 Revised elementary school Curriculum for 1st and 2nd graders and the 2022 revised elementary school Curriculum for 1st and 2nd graders. The results of the textbook vocabulary examination showed that the Chinese character vocabulary included in the 2022 Curriculum textbooks increased by subject compared to the Chinese character vocabulary included in the 2015 Curriculum textbooks. When integrating all subjects and measuring the total vocabulary, the number of first-grade textbooks increased by 242 from 915 textbooks in the 2015 Curriculum to 1,157 textbooks in the 2022 Curriculum, and the number of second-grade textbooks increased by 448 from 1,387 textbooks in the 2015 Curriculum to 1,835 textbooks in the 2022 Curriculum. As a result of analyzing the Chinese characters that make up the total vocabulary, the number of first-grade textbooks increased by 105 characters from 788 to 893 characters, and the number of second-grade textbooks increased by 174 characters from 976 to 1,150 characters. The number of Chinese characters that make up the 2,830 Chinese character vocabulary used in the 2015 & 2022 Curriculum 1st and 2nd grade textbooks is 1,358 characters. Among these, the top 600 characters were compared with the basic Chinese characters for elementary education from previous research institutions, and 501 characters were used in common, but 99 characters were not. This can be said to be the result of other research institutions selecting Chinese characters for elementary school education from among the basic Chinese characters for Chinese education (900 characters for middle school) established by the Ministry of Education. Therefore, when selecting basic Chinese characters for elementary school education, it is necessary to select them by reflecting the Chinese characters that make up the high-frequency Chinese vocabulary of elementary school textbooks.
