초록
When Mark Twain was active as a writer, the dominant literary tradition in 19th-century America was the “genteel tradition,” which was centered in the Northeast. In this tradition, only refined, elevated language was considered valuable as literary language. On the other hand, regional dialects, such as the vernacular of the Southwestern frontier, were dismissed as lacking artistic merit. Twain, however, was critical of this literary norm. He deliberately introduced Southwestern dialects into literature, elevating the value of these languages and highlighting their worth. His most significant contribution was the use of African American vernacular, particularly the speech of enslaved African American, as a literary language. If the dialects and the linguistic vitality of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are not preserved in translation, the essence of Twain’s literary and linguistic democratization is lost. This paper reflects on these issues, particularly focusing on the translation of the dialects in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and proposes alternatives for translating African American vernacular.
Abstract
