외국어 교육의 필요성과 방향성에 대한 논의가 절실한 시점에서, 본 연구는 관찰과 인터뷰를 중심으로 한 질적 접근의 종단적 연구를 통해 매체를 주로 활용하는 외국어 교육 프로그램의 실제적 양상과 그 효과를 살피고자 하였다. 이러한 목적으로, 경기도 소재 N 직장어린이집의 만 2세와 만 5세 아동 8명을 대상으로 총 10개월에 걸쳐 수업을 관찰하고, 아동, 교사, 부모를 대상으로 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 매체는 경제성과 효율성 측면에서 교사의 수업 준비에 긍정적 영향을 미쳤고, 비원어민 교사의 성공적인 수업 진행 가능성을 높였으며, 수업에 대한 피드백의축적으로 환류효과를 가짐으로써 저비용·고효율의 외국어 교육의 가능성을 기대할 수 있게 했다. 학습 효과 측면에서, 아동은 영어와 중국어를 올바로 구분하여 습득해 나갔으며, 외국어에 대한 흥미와 자신감 역시 향상되었다. 더욱 자세한 연구 결과와 함께 후속 연구에 대해 제언하였다.
Abstract
Considering the importance of foreign language education, the present study aimed to investigate the characteristics and features of a multimedia-assisted foreign language program and to address its effects on child learners’ language development. Four two-year-olds and four five-year-olds (eight children in total) attending at N Daycare Center in Gyeonggi Province participated in this study, and their English and Chinese classes were observed over a 10-month period. The results of the study revealed multimedia’s potential benefits in many ways: For example, teachers were able to prepare their classes with more ease and efficiency and it was possible for nonnative teachers to function effectively as language teachers. Also, the child participants were found to have improved in their language skills as well as in their attitudes towards foreign language learning. More detailed findings are presented and discussed.
