Abstract

Hideo Kobayashi who is an extroadinary Japanese critic started his literary career as a novelist and a critic. This fact dose not mean Kobayashi had two talents. If we read his earlier works, we can understand that he had experienced a kind of crisis on his self-consciousness and language. The crisis came from the influence of French symbolism. But he had to overcome the barrier of the foreign literature. So he made up his mind to examine his own consciousness through the internal thinking. For that purpose he wrote two novels whose speaker was “ I ”. Those titles were “ An testament of Ophilia” and “A letter to X”. Kobayashi realized that he should start his literature from the existential isolation and the material theory on language. This essay aims to clarify the course of Kobayashi’s goal.
