After the Liberal Democratic Party's forceful conclusionof a new security treaty and a general resignation of the Kishi Cabinet, the Ikeda Cabinet fully broughtthe financial issue of the increase of incomes to conceal the political topic, by which the period of theJapan's rapid growth began in earnest. However, the financial topic did not completely overwhelm the political issue. In February 1965, asthe U.S. was fully involved in the Vietnamese Civil War and launched an attack on North Vietnam,Okinawa became the base in the Frontline of the Vietnam War, and because of this, Japan's positionunder the control of the U.S. came to reemerge. Also, in the late 1960s, the return of Okinawa emergedas another political issue. The Japanese society in the 1960s formed a society of mass consumption in which the lifestylebecame standardized, with economic growth, but ‘elements of a postwar confusion period’ implied in thesociety continued to ask a question about the basis of the presence way of Japanese. Then, in whatway a discourse of the national initiative was being formed in the then Japanese society? This study will look into the discussions about the national initiative in Japan in the 1960s and1970s. Especially, this paper will attempt to analyze what discussions Okinawa triggered and intervene inthe national initiative, through two intellectuals, Yoshimoto Takaaki and Tanigawa Kenichi whoapproached Okinawa ideologically and psychologically.
