초록

It is not that rare case that students have difficulty using Japanese compound verbs even when theyknow the meaning of them. This is closely related to the situation in which they lack the knowledgeabout the prototypical context. To support the students in this respect, it is necessary to be able toanalyze the general context in which Japanese compound verbs are used. Analyzing the contextsystematically requires a methodology which enables it. This paper focused on the usage of the Japanesecompound verbs involved with evaluative meaning and tested whether it's possible to analyze the contextin terms of the evaluative aspects. To do that, appraisal theory proposed by Martin&White (2005) wasadopted. The theory was developed in the context of systemic functional grammar. One of Japanesecompound verbs, kazaritateru, was analyzed as a case study. Through the analysis, it was revealed thatthe evaluative meaning of kazaritateru is closely related to the context in terms of its evaluative aspects. Chapter 2 and 3 showed that the distribution of the expressions involved with attitude system isco-related with its usage. Also, It was observed that the percentage of the expressions involved withengagement system is different depending on the usage of kazaritateru. This reflects that thecharacteristics of the text could be different when its expected readers are different. In chapter 4, it wasbriefly examined how this approach could be applied to the education of Japanese compound verbs whichhave evaluative meaning. This paper suggested that the methodology adopted here could be used to theeducation of Japanese compound verbs.
