초록
The purpose of the present study is to investigate how Korean university students perceive the Ideal L2 Self and the Ought-to L2 Self in their English learning, and to examine the relationship of these perceptions with family influence. For the study, a total of 31 items were adopted from the questionnaire developed by Taguchi et al. (2006), which was a modified version of Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System (2005). Specifically, the questionnaire included 10 items for the Ideal L2 Self, 10 items for the Ought-to L2 Self, and 11 items for Family Influence. The survey was administered to a total of 101 university students. The results regarding the degree of each construct showed that the mean score for the Ideal L2 Self was 3.54 (SD = 1.11), for the Ought-to L2 Self was 3.00 (SD = 1.33), and for Family Influence was 2.92 (SD = .87). Correlational analysis revealed a low correlation between the Ideal L2 Self and Family Influence, whereas a strong correlation was found between the Ought-to L2 Self and Family Influence. Although the generalizability of the findings is limited due to the specific nature of the questionnaire and the sample, the study suggests that, from an educational perspective, it is important for learners to develop a clear understanding of their current motivational state and future self-guides in the process of second language acquisition.
