This paper proposes that the “doubled vocative,” in Japanese, analyzed in terms of the second person in novels and everyday conversations, is a characteristic of conversation in fiction, In addition, the doubled vocative found in daily conversations also suggests that fictionality is assumed. In a fictional conversation, the use of second person nouns helps readers understand from whom, and to whom, the speech is uttered. While it is difficult to express characters’ feelings with the use of second person nouns, the author can instead make use of second person pronouns in an appropriate manner. The doubled vocative appears when using only a noun or pronoun is not enough to convey the speaker’s feelings to the readers. Compared with its use with other phrases of the second person in anteroposterior scenes, the doubled vocative explicitly indicates subtle shifts in the emotion of the speaker. In contrast, in real conversations, there are few instances of the double vocative found at the start of narrative discourse. This research concludes that the doubled vocative creates a fictional space within a discourse space occurring here and now.
