Abstract
This study proposes an evidence‑led framework for classifying College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) English listening items and examines its alignment with the official taxonomy. Using the 2025 exam’s 17 listening items, each item was reclassified along two axes — the explicitness of answer evidence in the script and the level of cognitive processing required — and then assigned process‑revealing subtypes through a four‑step procedure. Results show a near‑balanced distribution (9 literal vs. 8 inferential). Items labeled by the authority as context/main‑idea inference or complex (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 16, 17) proved literal because decisive clues were stated explicitly, whereas several ‘detail’ items (5, 6, 10–15) required non‑explicit integration such as behavior prediction, condition optimization, tabular/graphic reasoning, or pragmatic response selection. We therefore relabel ‘indirect speaking’ as response‑inference and disaggregate ‘complex’ into subtypes (topic/opinion/central idea; ‘detail’: match/mention/graphic; speaker‑action; table/condition; integrated calculation; situational response). Grounded in cognitive, constructivist, educational, and language‑processing perspectives, the framework strengthens validity for item classification and instructional alignment. Practical recommendations include publishing a blueprint ratio for literal–inferential items, recording evidence metadata during item writing, and reporting evidence type and processing level in score feedback. Limitations (single year; no process/psychometric data) and future work (multi‑year corpus, inter‑rater reliability, diagnostic models, online processing studies) are outlined.
