Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore how learners perceive Japanese composition and the essential elements for effective composition by utilizing mind maps in Japanese composition classes. The results indicated that the majority of learners recognized mind maps as effective tools for organizing thoughts and setting the direction of their writing. Specifically, 'organization of thoughts' and 'ease of content structuring' were identified as the main advantages of using mind maps, which aligns with the results of previous studies. However, during the actual composition stage, there were cases where the effectiveness of mind maps was limited due to difficulties in expression, incomplete understanding of grammar, and challenges in using vocabulary and kanji. Furthermore, learners organized content in various ways, not just following the traditional 'central theme–subtopics' structure but also based on time sequences or personal criteria. The result suggests that learners are flexibly organizing their thought processes. Based on these findings, the study proposes that effective use of mind maps in composition requires clear guidance on how to connect mind maps to composition, preemptive support to alleviate language difficulties, and systematic instruction on writing strategies.
