Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of a learner-centered, project-based approach in enhancing student engagement and motivation in Japanese language education. First-year students in the Department of Japanese at K University participated in a project titled Creating a Japanese Guide Map Leaflet Recommended by Local University Students. Students collaboratively engaged in all stages of the project, including planning, fieldwork, translation, presentation, and production, with minimal instructor intervention. The course emphasized key competencies such as problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and responsibility. Native Japanese speakers provided formative feedback, allowing learners to refine language use in authentic contexts. Peer assessment and feedback further supported a student-driven learning environment. Findings indicate that the project fostered greater learners' autonomy, motivation, and interpersonal skills while also contributing to linguistic development. This case points out the importance of project-based, learner-centered instruction as an effective model for Japanese language education in higher education contexts.
