Abstract
This paper examines discourses related to tigers produced in Japan from ancient times to the modern era. Transcending time, the Japanese imagined the Korean Peninsula through tigers. Tigers allowed the Japanese imagination to extend to the Korean Peninsula. In an era when transportation and communication were underdeveloped, tigers played a leading role in the Japanese imagination of the Korean Peninsula. In ancient Japan, tigers on the Korean Peninsula were perceived in connection with the state. In historical texts compiled by Japanese intellectuals, tigers on the Korean Peninsula were symbolized as “tiger hunting” in connection with historical ideology. The legend of Hasuhi's tiger hunt, established in the Nihon Shoki, was passed down to Kato Kiyomasa's tiger hunt, a hero of the Imjin War. This story was also engraved in the unconscious of the people through various literary works, performing arts, and ukiyo-e, thanks to the explosive growth of commercial publishing in the Edo period. Yamamoto's Seikoki(征虎記) inherits this tradition, overlapping the modern view of nature with the imperialist view.
