엘리트 의사집단의 식민지 진출과 근대한국 의학교육: 사토 고조(佐藤剛藏)와 동인회(同仁会)를 중심으로

이 연구에서는 일본의 근대의학 도입의 과정 속에서 형성된 의사집단의 계급형성의 모습과 이러한 일본식 근대의학교육 시스템이 식민지 조선의 이식되는 과정에 대해 살펴본다. 한국의 근대 의학의 출발과 전개가 일제강점기의 식민지 정책과 맞물려 있다는 특수성이 한국 근대의학교육 현장에 미친 영향은 매우 복합적인 성격을 띤다. 특히 일제강점기 관주도적인 의료기관 및 학교 건설 과정에서 식민지의학 체계 마련에 가담한 엘리트의사 단체나 개인들의 활동은 주목할 만하다. 여기에서는 이들이 한국 근대의학시스템에 어떻게 관여하고 변형을 이루어가며 근대 한국인과 접촉해 갔는지 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 개항기와 일제 초기에 활약했던 의사단체인 동인회 및 일본의 식민지의학 전개 속에 드러난 의학교육과 관련된 인물, 특히 사토고조의 기록을 중심으로 고찰한다. 이를 통해 한반도 지배의 구조적 장치 속에서 형성된 한국 근대의학교육 형성의 세부와 개인(제국실현을 위한 주체, 재조일본인, 일본(한국)의학생 등)의 욕망 사이에 벌어진 다양한 현상들에 대해 살펴본다.
Abstract
This study examined the aspect of the formation of a social class by medical groups that had been created in the process of introducing modern medicine in Japan, and the process of transplanting this Japanese-style modern medical education system to colonial Joseon. The start and development of modern Korean medicine were intertwined with the colonial policy during the Japanese occupation. The impact of this situation on the field of modern medical education in Korea has very complex characteristics. In particular, the activities of elite medical groups and individuals are noteworthy, who participated in the establishment of a colonial medical system in the process of constructing medical institutions and schools led by the colonial government. This study aimed to examine how such elite medical groups and individuals were involved in and transformed the Korean modern medical system, and came into contact with modern Koreans. In particular, the records of the following were focused on: Donginhoe (同仁會), a medical group that was active in the late 19th century and early Japanese colonial period; figures related to medical education identified in the development of colonial medicine, especially Sato Kozo (佐藤剛藏). Based on these, various phenomena were examined that occurred between the details of the formation of Korean modern medical education organized in the structural device for dominating the Korean Peninsula and individual desires (e.g. main agents for the realization of imperialism, Japanese in Korea, and Japanese/Korean medical students).
