Abstract
This study aims to clarify the differences in meaning and usage between the motion verbs ‘往’(ō) and ‘行’(kō) in The NIHONSHOKI. The analysis reveals that, regarding the meanings of departure, passage, and arrival, ‘往’ is mostly used to indicate arrival, while ‘行’ is primarily used to express passage. At the end of a sentence, both verbs are used to denote departure, but when an arrival verb and a destination are presented together, they indicate passage, and when an action verb is connected or used with a particle, they indicate arrival with a specified destination. In contrast, ‘往’ expresses arrival when used with a destination or an indefinite pronoun, while ‘行’ expresses passage when used with a passing point or indications of direction/time. Notably, ‘行’ is sometimes used to mean arrival in the β group of The NIHONSHOKI, possibly due to the compilers' confusion or misuse, though this is not definitive. Furthermore, ‘往’ tends to be used in articles and with people related to the Korean Peninsula, while ‘行’ is prevalent in articles and with people related to Japan. This tendency is presumed to be due to the nature of The NIHONSHOKI's sources. This study contributes to the research on motion expressions in Early Japanese by elucidating the semantic characteristics and differences in the usage of ‘往’ and ‘行’ in The NIHONSHOKI.
