Abstract
Performing Medieval and Renaissance music faces quite a number of difficult matters. Primary and secondary sources to consult are not enough, and if any explanations are often unrealistic or contradictory among them. This paper is a study on one of those matters, performing mediums of Medieval and Renaissance vocal music. Discussions are centered on diverse primary and secondary sources, recent scholarly controversies about a capella vs. instrumental participation based upon those sources, and examples of historical performing mediums of the time. Thereby, a kind of percolated guideline for historically authentic practices is given.
