이 글은 소위 ‘수행적 전환’(performative turn)의 시대에 ‘수행이론’(Performance Studies)이 음악학 연구에 미치는 영향과 의미에 대해 고찰해보려는 글이다. 서구예술음악 중심의 전통적 음악학 연구는 왜 악보중심의 음악학이 되었으며, ‘연주’ 중심, 혹은 ‘수행’ 중심으로 음악학의 연구대상이 변한다는 것은 무엇을 말하는가, 음악 외 인문학 전반에 일고 있는 ‘수행이론’은 무엇인가 등을 살펴보고, 수행이론의 관점에서 최근의 음악연주 혹은 현대예술을 바라보는 것은 유용한가, 어떤 점에서 그러한가라는 점에서 논의를 정리하고 있다. 수행이론의 관점에서 음악을 바라보는 것은 음악연주를 하나의 사건으로, 여러 사람들이 상호작용하는 사회적 현상으로 보는 것이고, 나아가, 그 경험을 구성하는 일련의 사회적 과정 중에서 의미가 발생하는 현장으로 본다는 것이다.
Abstract
During the first decade of 21st cnetury, the ontological priority of musical text has been shaken by prominence of the musical performance. In such an era of “performative turn”, this article deals with the influence and implication of performance studies on the traditional musicological research. Why the western art music centered musicology has been oriented towards the reconstruction and dessemination of authritative texts and what a paradigm-shift from musical texts to performance implies are considered. To understand musical performance from the view of performance studies means to see it as an ‘event’as an social phenomenon that results from the interaction of different individuals, and, beyond the locus of performance, to observe it in the process where the experience has been constructed.
