Abstract
Many undergraduate studying piano performance in Korea have taught their instrument to children, and others before graduation. The purpose of this research is investigating the careers of piano major students as teachers, their beliefs about piano teaching, and where these beliefs vary between groups. Participants in this study(N=-77) were piano majors across performance, accompaniment, and pedagogy programs. They responded to 28 items based on the original work by Mills using a 7-pointed Likert-type scale running from 1(very strongly agree) through 4(no opinion) to 7(very strongly disagree). The research questions are categorized as follows: 1. Teaching and my career as a performer; 2. The students I would like to teach; 3. Why I would enjoy teaching and my responsibility; 4. My need for teacher training; 5. The relationship between my teaching and playing; 6. Teaching styles and curriculum; 7. The status of private lesson teaching as an occupation. The result showed that overall, the piano major students felt positively about doing some private teaching, and just more than half indicated that the primary motivation to do so would be monetary. Most acknowledge wanting to teach at the college/university level at some point. Teaching private lessons was seen as something that would benefit their own performance, but that benefit was not mentioned by their own teachers on a regular basis. These college piano majors strongly agreed that it was necessary to have training to become a good piano teacher, and the idea that a good performer would always be a good teacher was strongly denied.
