본 연구는 북마리아나 제도에 속하는 사이판의 역사와 지리적 배경, 관광자원 유형별 특성 등 관광정보 콘텐츠를 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 사이판은 특유의 자연경관과 원주민 문화가 결합된 매력적인 국외여행 목적지로서 과거 태평양전쟁의 격전지로 뼈아픈 흔적들이 남아있는 곳이다. 사이판의 관광지역은 북부, 중부, 남부로 나눌 수 있고, 관광개발을 통해 단순한 전적지와 자연경승 관광에서 탈피해 레저 활동을 즐길 수 있는 휴양지로 부각되었다. 본 연구는 한국인의 사이판 여행을 위한 안내 자료나 세계관광자원을 학습하는 관광학 및 지리 관련 대학생들을 위한 정보로 활용될 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine information contents on historical geography and tourism resources of Saipan in the sphere of Northern Mariana Islands. Saipan is an attractive overseas travel destination with unique natural landscape and aboriginal culture combined. It was a fierce battle field during the Pacific War, and thus, many tragic remains of war are witnessed here and there on the island. The tourism sphere of Saipan can be divided into northern, middle and southern parts. Owing to development of tourism, the island has grown into a recess complex allowing for a variety of leisure activities rather than a simple historical battle field endowed with exquisite landscape. The study provides for a guide for the Korean tourists visiting Saipan as well as for some basic data for the college students majoring in world geography or tourism.
